MAŁOPOLSKA MOODS

Małopolska prides itself on the greatest local folk diversity – and that is why one could say that the Małopolska moods are changeable…
A wealth of forms, textures, colours, fabrics and ornamentation can be typically discerned in traditional festive costume in the individual regions. The diversity that we can currently observe results from many processes and their varied pace. It has been conditioned by history, neighbours and undoubtedly technological advancement – providing availability of various fabrics. Of great significance has always been the creator’s individual input – their craftsmanship – but above all sensitivity and imagination, which is developed from childhood, and which is so powerful in the early years of a child’s life that it can turn even the simplest objects such as a stick, some grass or a rag ball into a world of toys and games. Interestingly enough, children’s games are all similar in every region – they appear to be the common denominator of a child’s further development. As a child grows older, games change, and as they become imitative of the world of adults they let the child leave the childhood years behind.

Imagination, which develops parallel to the child’s overall development, is affected by the surroundings and conditioned by experience. At the same time, however, its little whispering voice offers its own solutions, becoming a source of development and variety.

The exhibition will feature this variety captured in a wealth of festive costume from the individual regions, as well as that which is common to all the Małopolska regions, that is toys and games created with the benefit of the child’s unfettered imagination.

The visitors will also have an opportunity to test their own imagination – to see if it is a match for the one that is capable of turning a stone, grass and a rag ball into whatever it fancies. Will it be enough for us to “try on” a traditional Lach, Krakowiak or highlander costume? Or perhaps it will let us ride a real stick horse, or set an extraordinary wooden flapping bird in motion…?
