Time and space. Of course, PIĄTKOWIOKI’s space encompasses Piątkowa, but also Chełmiec with its Community Centre, and then... indeed the entire region inhabited by the Sącz Lachs. As for time, it embraces thirty-two years of the PIĄTKOWIOKI Song and Dance Folk Ensemble's activity, as well as subsequent generations of dancers, vocalists and musicians. And over the years, the ensemble representing Nowy Sącz and its environs have made space for themselves in the region, the country and the continent... And their time spans not just these 32 years, but the history and tradition of their own region (of the Sącz Lachs) as well as several other regions in southern Poland: of the Szczyrzyc Lachs, Spiš, Rocky Podhale, the Żywiec and Krakowiak districts.
From the places within the national and continental space they have brought awards - but we would not make enough time to list them here — and they have taken part in so many Polish and European festivals that we would run out of space trying to tell you about them all. Suffice it to say that this is the fifth time they have acted as the hosts of the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS.
This year PIĄTKOWIOKI will take us to the time of a May evening filled with prayers at a wayside shrine. They will bring back the times when the sounds of button accordions would soar above the meadows around Nowy Sącz, and a time of the topping out celebration at cooper Franciszek’s, for which the musical band will undoubtedly be a little late. And “our meadow” will provide the space, though it’s hard to say who exactly “our” refers to? The boys or the girls? There is the rub! Because there will also be a time in a young person’s development when the space intervening between the sexes becomes increasingly clear, and this boundary can give rise to both shared fun and conflict.
