WAWEL

Edition 2023
Several years ago, the building of the Marine Station in Gdynia became the seat of one of the most beautiful museums in Poland - the unique Museum of Emigration. On the one hand, this institution is superbly equipped and prepared; on the other hand, it tells the story of national pain, and at the same time, of hope. Everyone who ever came to this place to start a new emigrant life, said goodbye, usually with regret, to the old, familiar corners, to their well-established relationships, and then sailed towards the unknown, looking for betterment, “for bread,” and hope.
Some of these emigrants ended up in Texas and put down roots there. They became “Polish Cowboys and Cowgirls in Texas,” unwittingly providing an idea for the title and theme of the show that the children of the WAWEL Song and Dance Ensemble would many years later prepare for the jubilee edition of the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS.

The Houston-based WAWEL ensemble is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting Polish culture through song and dance. The WAWEL, MINI WAWEL and BABCIA WAWEL sections accommodate people of all ages.

The children from the WAWEL ensemble, which operates under the auspices of the Polish Roman Catholic Church Our Lady of Czestochowa, is coming to Nowy Sącz with a performance illustrating the Polish roots in Texas. They will combine country music with traditional Polish pieces; trojak, kujawiak, oberek and krakowiak with Texas line dancing. And the background will be filled with music played on a violin, a double bass and a viola.

A Polonia ensemble among the foreign ensemble? The precedent has already been set: seventeen years ago, at the 14th Festival, the White Eagle from Canada performed. The 30th, jubilee edition of the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS will be just as special!
