TRYBSKIE DZIECI

Edition 2018
The village of Trybsz lies in the curve of the Białka river, in the northern part of Spiš – a historical and ethnographic region, a small part of which is today within the Polish borders, while the majority is located in Slovakia. To the west the Polish Spiš borders Podhale, and to the north and east – the Gorce and Pieniny ranges . The village boasts a real gem of sacred architecture – a wooden church dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. It was constructed in 1567 of larch wood without a single nail used. The greatest attraction that makes visiting the church worthwhile is a 17th-century polychrome painted in 1647, representing biblical scenes as well as a panorama of the Tatras, which is the oldest imagistic rendition of the mountains. Currently, Trybsz is a thriving centre of folk art and agritourism farms located in the commune of Łapsze Niżne, as well as a great base from which to organise mountain treks in the Tatras and the Pieniny. It is from this picturesque village that the children’s folk ensemble TRYBSKIE DZIECI has come to take part in the Festival. They are affiliated with Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Primary School.
The Festival audience will see a programme entitled “A Tinker.” A group of boys are playing in front of a house. They start arguing and it soon transpires that they have been made to stay home, do some chores and look after some young girls as punishment. They are in poor spirits, because they were not allowed to attend the consecration ceremony of a wayside shrine. A tinker arrives and begins telling the boys about his job, showing them the contents of his backpack filled with tools. The group is joined by children and a musical band who are coming from the consecration ceremony. The children begin playing in a circle, and later engage in such games as wyścigi baranów, żaby, ścinanie bucków, ciągnięcie ‘kocuròf’, nabijanie klińca, as well as dances: ciardaś, kulawy, chodzony, malorz, mazur, polka mietłowa.
Anna Stronczek is the ensemble leader, instructor and choreographer, and the musical band, which is headed by Grzegorz Kowalczyk, will be playing violins and a double bass.
