Among the ethnographic groups in the Polish Subcarpathia, the Foothill Dwellers used to inhabit the most extensive areas that stretched west to east in a belt parallel to the Low Beskids. They created a culture of a borderline and mixed character, at the interface of the highland Carpathian culture and the groups in the centre of Małopolska, mainly Krakowiaks. At the Festival the region will be represented by the Children’s Folk Ensemble POGÓRZAŃSKIE DZIECI from Kąclowa – a village situated on the Biała river in the commune of Grybów. The ensemble was founded under the auspices of the Community Centre in Grybów in October 2016. The repertoire includes traditional Foothill dances, ditties, melodies, games and the local dialect.
Despite the short time of its activity, POGÓRZAŃSKIE DZIECI participates in the local cultural life, gracing with its presence a number of festive events such harvest festivals, fêtes, May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary, picnics and the like. In 2017 the ensemble gave a performance at the amphitheatre in the town of Veľký Šariš, Slovakia.
At the Festival, the ensemble will present a programme entitled “Children alone at home.” On Monday morning, the parents are getting ready for a fair in Grybów. Before they leave, they tell the children to do some household chores. Having fulfilled their duties, the children invite their next-door friends to play and dance together. While they are having fun, out of the window they can see some musicians walking down the road. They ask them to come round. The Festival audience will thus have a chance to see such games as stary niedźwiedź, wygnała mie babka, ciuciubabka, kot i mysz, siała baba mak; as well as the following dances: mietlorz, kowol, walczyk, polka uciekana, naso polka, drąg, polka suwiec, polka mazurka, polka z podskokiem, wokółka, polka z przyśpiewkami.
Ewa Matuła is the ensemble founder, leader, instructor and choreographer. A considerable role in the foundation of the ensemble was played by Tadeusz Matuła, who acts as the musical director. The musical band will be playing violins, a double bass and a diatonic button accordion.
