MAŁY ZBÓJNICEK

Edition 2023
It’s been 120 years since Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, a man of letters burning with unfeigned love of the Tatras, began presenting what had been happening “In the Rocky Podhale” in his novellas written in the local dialect.
Similarly, for almost 60 years subsequent generations of the MAŁY ZBÓJNICEK ensemble children have been keeping us up to date. However, they have been telling us about the Rocky Podhale in their traditional two-voice singing, dancing and games.

And there is one more difference. Master Przerwa-Tetmajer was born in the Podhale village of Ludźmierz, and MAŁY ZBÓJNICEK was established in the village of Ząb in 1964. At first the ensemble was affiliated with the primary school, but sometime later it came under the auspices of the local branch of the Podhale Inhabitants’ Association.

And so the ensembles comes from one of the highest settlements in Poland, bringing a precious wave of sounds and dance steps of ozwodny, krzesany, po dwa, drobny, ze starej, zbójnicki... playing melodies on violins and a double bass - the instruments that we will have an opportunity to meet and even make friends with.

And on a July Festival evening the MAŁY ZBÓJNICEK children will transport us in time and space. In time, because the performance will be concerned with a traditional May devotion; and in space, because we will visit some clearing in the Rocky Podhale mountains. There’ll be picking of brushwood and flowers for garlands to be consecrated. There’ll be fun and games, dances and songs. The traditional zbójnicki and a showpiece dance on a tree stump. It will all be Podhale-like through and through.

This year, MAŁY ZBÓJNICEK is attending the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS in Nowy Sącz for the first time. Let us give them a warm welcome!
