MALI TONIECNICI

Edition 2016
Krempachy is a village located in the northern part of the historico-ethnographic region of Spiš. Today, the bulk of this area belongs to Slovakia, and only its little northernmost fragment reaches the curve of the Białka river to the northwest (beyond which stretches Podhale), and the Czorsztyn Lake and Sromowieckie Lake to the northeast. “Mali Toniecnici” Children’s Folk Ensemble was established in Krempachy in 1995. It operates under the aegis of the Community Centre in Łopuszna, and has two age groups: the youngest one (children aged 8-13) and the older one. Both groups number around 30 kids. It was already in the next year that the ensemble qualified for the 5th edition of the Festival of the Children of Mountains, only to return to the Nowy Sącz Festival 20 years later. This year’s programme is entitled “On the Krempachy Bridge,” and it is set on the river on a Sunday afternoon. Boys gather on the river to catch fish, while girls wish to dance and sing, and so they walk onto the bridge. Their merrymaking is interrupted by a boy who has got upset, for they scare his fish away. This gives rise to strife between boys and girls. Still, everything ends well with dancing and music playing. After all, music has charms to soothe a savage breast.
“Mali Toniecnici” will be accompanied by a band playing a primary violin, two secondary violins and a double bass.
Maria Wnęk is the ensemble leader and choreographer, and Dominika Wnęk is the band leader.
