MALI BIAŁCANIE

Edition 2018
Białka Tatrzańska lies in the Rocky Podhale, a region located at the foot of the Tatras. Thanks to its picturesque situation, the village is reckoned among the most beautiful places in all of Podhale – it offers magnificent views of the Slovakian Tatras and the High Tatras. Founded at the beginning of the 17th century, Białka Tatrzańska lies in the valley of the Białka river, which springs out of the confluence of two streams running down from the Tatras – Rybi Potok and Biała Woda. The name of the village is thus derived from the Białka river waters foaming on white granite stones; it also delineates a natural boundary between Slovakia and Poland, and then between the regions of Podhale and Spiš. Currently, Białka Tatrzańska is most famous for winter tourism and sports, as the abounds in ski lifts.
MALI BIAŁCANIE was founded in 1984 by Mr Stanisław Zagata and Mr Józef Nowobilski. The ensemble cultivates the native tradition of the Podhale region, handing it from generation to generation in the forms of singing, dancing, ancient customs and games. The ensemble’s programmes are based on children’s joyous games that used to accompany manifold occasions, interspersed with highland singing and dancing. Every year MALI BIAŁCANIE takes part in a number of competitions, contests and folk festivals both in the country and abroad, winning top awards for singing, dancing, recitation and storytelling.
At the Festival the ensemble will present a programme entitled “By the Forest,” which draws on shepherd themes. While pasturing cattle and sheep, children would often make time for common merrymaking and dancing. The Festival audience will thus have a chance to see such games as gąski, rychtar as well as games involving use of walking sticks, traditional highland dances (solówka przeryncano, dwójka, zbójnicki), and to hear traditional shepherd songs.
Mrs Teresa Remiasz and Mr Stanisław Remiasz are the ensemble leaders. The musical band will be accompanying the performances on violins and a double bass.
