“Małe Lachy” Song and Dance Folk Ensemble was established in Nowy Sącz in 1956. It is supported by the Society of Friends of the “Lachy” Folk Ensemble, its own patronage institution. “Małe Lachy” represents the ethnographic region of the Sącz Lachs, which in respect of its culture is one of the most distinctive Polish Subcarpathian groups which came into existence at the contact point of the Carpathian highlanders and Krakowiaks. The Lach villages are nestled in the vast and fertile Sącz Valley, and the most significant towns – Stary Sącz and Nowy Sącz – which constitute the group’s centre are situated at the meeting point of the three main rivers: Dunajec, Poprad and Kamienica Nawojowska.
At the Festival the ensemble will present a programme entitled “Grazing in the Fallow Land.” While grazing cattle in the fallow, some children are at play, running and cracking whips. A group of boys busy grazing is approached by a younger stranger. At first, he has to answer a couple of tricky questions to take part in the fun and games. At last, he is splashed with water and only then can he become a fully-fledged shepherd. He is also asked to bring his sister, who is supposed to play the violin for the children engaged in such games as trzeciak, na wysokim dębie, czyżyk, and such dances as suwana, kowol, polka z przyśpiewkami, szarpok and cięta polka.
The Festival audience will have a chance to see and hear such instruments as the violin, the double bass, the clarinet and the trumpet.
Zuzanna Poręba is the ensemble leader, Ewelina Kwiatkowska is the choreographer, and Mateusz Gadzina is the band leader.
