Brenna is a village situated in the mountainous region of the Silesian Beskids, in the Cieszyn County. The history of the settlement of these hardly penetrable lands is closely linked with grazing and felling. The first mention of Brenna dates back to the end of the 15th century, and grazing in the mountainous clearings began along with the arrival of the Wallachs in the Duchy of Teschen in the 16th century. The bulk of today’s traditions and rites are therefore rooted in the grazing culture. The MAŁA BRENNA Children’s Folk Ensemble was established in 2009 in answer to the problem that the adult folk ensembles in the Commune of Brenna had been grappling with for quite some time – a lack of budding and young candidates that could demonstrate a little experience as well as some dancing and singing skills. Having gone through some teething troubles, the ensemble expanded, meeting with first success in county and province festivals. MAŁA BRENNA has participated in international festivals, and visited a number of Polish, Czech and Slovakian towns.
At the Festival the ensemble will present a programme entitled “In a pastureland”, featuring a day filled with children’s occupations, from the moment when at dawn the sisters take the cows out to pasture until their return at dusk. Throughout the day the children while away the time singing, dancing and playing music.
Anna Musiał is the ensemble leader and choreographer, and Damian Nowak is the musical band leader.
