KRAKOWIACZEK

Edition 2015
KRAKOWIACZEK Song and Dance Ensemble was established in 2003 in the village of Grojec, under the patronage of the Local Community Centre in the Commune of Alwernia, located within the agglomeration of Cracow. The ensemble numbers 45 members aged 5-19, who present the folklore of Western and Eastern Krakowiaks, Sącz Lachs as well as some Silesian dances.
At the Festival the ensemble will present a programme entitled “After the Church Fair”, which according to the local tradition is referred to as a “shoot-out”. The name is derived from the mortar salvo fired on the nearby mountain. After the church fair in Alwernia the mother sends the children with the eldest daughter off to the pasture so that they can play there. She gives them candy bought at the fair. The children play at millwheel, wasp, blind man’s buff, and then dance oberek, krakowiak and poleczka. While dancing they are being accompanied by the musicians who have just come back from the “shoot-out.” Some teenagers stop by the children while passing through the pasture. Having exchanged a few words, they begin singing and dancing chodzony, polka, polka-mazurka, krakowiak and oberek.
Teresa Majewska is the ensemble leader, instructor and choreographer; the musical band is headed by Paweł Szafarski.
