The ensemble comes from the town of Vinkovci, situated in the northeastern region of Slavonija, which alongside Dalmatia, Croatia proper and Istria, is one of the four historical regions of Croatia. GATALINKA was established in 1994 to promote folklore and traditional instrument playing among children.
At the Festival, the ensemble will present valpovo (a dance from Slavonija), kirbaj (a village-related religious holiday in honour of the saint to whom the village was dedicated), kraljičari (an All Souls’ Day parade of little girls), elements of a typical Slavonian wedding, “From Carnival Till Harvest” (a number of annual customs), “a captain dance” (originated on the Isle of Korčula), jezerski mornarski bal (divulging a wealth of Adriatic and Dinaric influence presented in the form of a ball thrown on the occasion of a young seaman going to sea for the first time), lutko ma, sridi luga zelenoga and prigorski plesovi.
The Festival audience will have a chance to see and hear a number of instruments belonging to the family of tamburica – a long-necked lute – such as bisernica (playing the main melody), brač and e-brač (which doubles the melody line one octave lower than the bisernica), čelo, bugarija (similar to the guitar), berde (as a bass instrument), samica, as well as a dvojnice, also called gaida (a type of woodwind instrument similar to bagpipes).
Blanka Žakula is the ensemble leader, and Miron Jurić is the band leader.
