Time? For over three decades, the mission of Ballet Folklórico Xochipitzahuatl del Colegio Nicolás Bravo de Saltillo A.C., founded on 2 October 1992 by Prof. Florentino Alvarado Quiroza, has been to instil in children, through dance and arts, a passion for discovering Mexico’s historical and regional identity.
The space that the ensemble from Saltillo in the Coahuila ethnographic region will show us around will be western and central Mexico. The performance will centre on dances from the regions of Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit. As for the dynamic choreographic routines the audience will see son, jarabe and huapango. Let us pay particular attention to the characteristic zapateado – the rhythmic stamping of feet on the ground – and let our hearts tremble during the spectacular machete displays.
The soundscape will be filled with songs traditionally performed by mariachi and conjunto norteño, accompanied by string and wind instruments, the accordion, the bajo sexto and the saxophone. Traditional Mexican children’s play and games will serve as a bridge between generations.
The BALLET FOLKLÓRICO XOCHIPITZAHUATL ensemble, which promotes cultural diversity – a sample of which we will be able to experience in Nowy Sącz – has won numerous awards, including first prizes in competitions organised by the Coahuila State Secretariat for Education and Culture. The ensemble has also represented Mexico at prestigious festivals in Taiwan, Turkey, Paraguay and the United States, as well as at numerous national events.
