BALLET FOLKLORICO INFANTIL COAHUILA

Edition 2017
Mexico, which lies in Central America, is a country of highly distinctive and rich culture easily recognisable thanks to such iconic symbols as mariachi, tequila and tacos. This is because Mexicans are by nature a cheerful, fun-loving people who never let a chance of good food and drink accompanied by music and dance slip by. Adjacent to the US southern border lies the Mexican state of Coahuila. Its capital Saltillo is home to Ballet Folklorico Infantil Coahuila, the ensemble affiliated with Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez Primary School. The ensemble was founded in 1983 to represent the institution during public and private events of regional, national and international significance.
The Festival audience will have a chance to see danza de Concheros (one of the most important expression forms of Mexican religiousness, with such symbols as the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the national three-coloured flag, feathered serpent Queztalcoatl and St James the Great), sones del estado de Nayarit (a medley of dances from Nayarit, with the typically flamboyant flapping of ‘faldeos’ and the dexterity of the dancers handling machetes), dances from Michoacán (las Iguiris – women’s dance, danza de los Viejitos – dance of the elderly, and danza del pescado – a dance of the fish), dances from the state of Jalisco, which encapsulate the most typical sounds of Mexican folklore. Here lies Santiago de Tequila, the town that originated world-famous drink. It is also the land of mariachi, charros (Mexican cowboys) and the national Mexican dance – jarabe tapatío.
Nemesio López Saucedo is the ensemble leader and choreographer; Carlos Ivan Aguilera is the band leader. The musical band will be playing a trumpet, a violin, a guitarrón (an acoustic bass guitar), a vihuela (a high-pitched guitar), a guitar and a huēhuētl (an upright, tubular drum of Aztec origin).
