The 29 NOEMVRI ensemble comes from Kumanovo, a city located in the Žegligovo region, in northern Macedonia, close to the Serbian border. The name Kumanovo is derived from the Mongolian-Tartar tribe of Cumans which in the 7th century arrived in this area from the Russian steppes. The population inhabiting this area is well-known throughout Macedonia for its valour (it is from here that the country's greatest national heroes come, and it was here that the first uprising against the Turks was staged), and for its “creative spirit” thanks to which the place is still vibrant with folk songs, dances and poetry. 29 NOEMVRI was founded in 1977. It numbers around 200 members - children aged 6-16. The ensemble's name means “29 November,” which is the date of the national holiday of the former Yugoslavia. It has presented its artistic skills at a number of contests and festivals, winning numerous awards and honourable mentions. It has also participated in international festivals in Germany, Bulgaria and Poland. At the Festival of the Children of Mountains the ensemble will present dances and songs from eastern Macedonia (“Istocna Macedonia”), folk games and wedding dances from the Skopje region (“Powardarie”), a dance of itinerant coppersmiths (“Kaladžisko”), as well as the folk custom of communal wool spinning after work in the field has been finished (“Sedenka”). The ensemble wears authentic folk costumes from the Cumans, eastern Macedonian and Skopje regions; the costumes are made with a traditional weaving technique and embroidered by folk artists.
