THE DAY OF SPIŠ, SILESIA & NIGERIA

This time the young participants in the workshop organized as part of the Festival got to know how in days of yore our grandmothers and grandfathers used to play and work, and they learnt to make paper pinwheels - a well-known symbol of the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS.
The children had an opportunity to carry water in pails suspended on a shoulder pole, shoot a slingshot at a scarecrow, throw horseshoes, do laundry on an old washboard, press wet clothes through a wringer, and even take part in a flour-sack fight. The actors from the VAGABOND THEATRE in Cracow took care of everything, making sure that the children learn about the world of yore through play and humour.

Several dozen metres away, Monika Zielińska-Klimczak was showing the children how to use paper, crayons, felt-tip pens, stamps and decorative materials to conjure up amazing Festival souvenirs - the pinwheels!
On Tuesday, the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS road took us all from Nigeria, via Jurgów to a Silesian cottage house.

The children of ST. GLORIA’S SCHOOL CULTURAL TROUPE presented above all dances, which in some points were stylised to resemble work done by the indigenous inhabitants of Africa.

The members of MALI JURGOWIANIE presented a vast array of games, ditties and dances native to their region. All this happened in front of a cottage, with the word hołdomas - fun, a meal after work - spoken many times.

The VLADISLAVIA children from Wodzisław Śląski greeted us in front of a cottage house as well. Their dances, games and songs were interspersed with traditional farmstead chores, whenever dad was working a shift at the mine.

Both the études were characterized by an interesting dramatic touch. In front of the Jurgów cottage, the problem was the use of a potato harvester by other villagers, inspiring a note of jealousy and regret that we had no choice but to lift the potatoes by hand, while in front of the Silesian cottage house the dramatic effect was built by pigeons that escaped from Karlik’s basket.
