Syrtos, Pentozalis, Maleviziotis, Sousta... What do these mysterious words stand for? They have something to do with music and movement, unity and tradition... they are names of dances. The dances that will arrive in Nowy Sącz as if on the wings of Daedalus, straight from Crete. And they represent the very essence of the Greek dance tradition from this extraordinary island.
The PSILORITIS Folk Dance Group from the city of Chania has been showing the wealth of traditions, customs and folk dances from Crete and other areas of Greece to the world for 45 years. To the whole world, we might say! They have given concerts in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal; they have performed in Poland and the Netherlands; they have been seen by Germans, Hungarians, Bulgarians and Russians; they have promoted the beauty of their culture in Africa, Asia and North America. From Mongolia and Lithuania they have brought awards for the artistry and authenticity of their dances.
On the other hand, they are also a great host. Every year, the PSILORITIS group organises, among other things, a “Festival of Cultural Encounters,” which serves as a time and place for cultural exchanges with other dance groups.
Dance carries a powerful emotional charge, so it is no surprise that it connects deeply with culture and tradition. For could you imagine Sir Thaddeus without the polonaise or The Wedding without the krakowiak? So it is no surprise that the people of Crete also have dance themes that are close to their hearts.
We will have an opportunity to see them. PSILORITIS is coming to Nowy Sącz with a vast array of Cretan dances. And in addition to these, we will be treated to a bite of delicious history, traditional costumes, as well as the social dimension of dance celebration.
