MALI MAGURZANIE

Edition 2026
The time and space of MALI MAGURZANIE span 22 years, but they also include more than 40 years of the heritage from the MAGURZANIE Folk Ensemble, of which our guests from Łodygowice this year form the younger group. Their place is, of course, the Żywiec region, but they have also won awards in Boguszowice, Jaworze, Baranów Sandomierski, Wisła/Ustroń, and Rabka-Zdrój. They have aroused admiration in Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic...
The time to which MALI MAGURZANIE are inviting us is, of course, unspecified. In fact, we might say this about all the performances presented at the FESTIVAL OF THE CHILDREN OF MOUNTAINS: a long time ago. Sometimes, you can specify a particular day of the year. However, it won’t be possible for the Łodygowice ensemble. Pentecost, or the Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, can be celebrated (depending on the year) between 10 May and 13 June. So even the month remains unspecified. And yet… it’s definitely Sunday.

And the place? One Sunday in May or June, MALI MAGURZANIE will invite us to a clearing somewhere in the Żywiec region to show us some bonfire games, often involving competition: dziad, ulijanka, kościsko and musylka, as well as frog races, salt-making and, of course, jumping over the fire. All this will be accompanied by the sounds of traditional shepherd’s instruments. The dances presented will include koło, siustany, obyrtka, and will be performed to the rhythm of a children’s musical band.

All that we are about see is the result of the ensemble’s work done in yet another dimension of time and space: the history of the region, as recorded in academic sources, or uncovered through interviews with eyewitnesses.
