Łącko is a village situated in the valley of the Dunajec river, at the northern slopes of the Radziejowa Range, which is a part of the Sącz Beskids. There is a very special microclimate here owing to the fact that Łącko is located at 400m above sea level, and the surrounding foothills reach 600m above sea level. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Sącz Beskids and its name is derived from a big number of meadows surrounding it (łąka – a ‘meadow’). Over the course of time, the village itself came to be recognised as the ‘capital city’ of fruit farming and processing, as well as of centuries-old original folk culture, which has been resiliently preserving its traditions in the form of numerous events, music schools, local folk ensembles, country housewives’ associations and folk artists.
In 2015 Aneta Wolańska originated an Artistic Group with a view to reconstructing the traditions, customs and rites of the Łącko Highlanders (a.k.a. White Highlanders), who inhabit the western part of the Sącz Region, at the meeting point between the Sącz Beskids, the Island Beskids and the Gorce Range. In time, the Artistic Group turned into an ensemble KIYRPECKI, and in 2017 a Kiyrpecki Association for Tradition, Promotion and Folk Culture was instituted. The original ensemble was joined by children and adults, which made it a multigenerational group, sometimes bringing together even whole families. KIYRPECKI take great care over cultural transmission in the Łącko District, organising numerous local culture workshops, meetings with ethnographers and folk artists, and participating in the life of the Church and the Commune.
The Festival audience will have an opportunity to see a programme entitled In a Zorzycki Forest clearing. The daughters are carrying juzyna (an evening meal) for their father. In a clearing they meet Adela, who is grazing cattle. They begin playing such games as pola, przepiórecko, and in time also blind man’s buff and scur, being joined by more and more children. Some girls join them as well. They have heard the call and came running with the uncle’s musical instruments which they took without his knowledge. Some of the children begin dancing to the music, others keep playing games. Soon, the uncle appears. Seeing his instruments, he gets angry and chases the playing children away.
Aneta Wolańska is the ensemble leader, instructor and choreographer. The musical band will be playing (primary and secondary) violins and a double bass.
