GORGANY

Edition 2022
If we were to count the years of folk ensembles like we do in the case of men, the Ukrainian ensemble GORGANY has just ceased to be a child; it was founded in 2004, so it is celebrating its 18th birthday.
But there are also other important dates. It has been 1160 years since Rurik, a Varangian ruler of the territory of today’s Ukraine, founded Veliky Novgorod, and united some Varangian, Eastern Slavic and Finno-Ugric tribes, thereby founding the first known Ruthenian state (which, incidentally, had nothing to do with Russia) - Novgorod Ruthenia, and originating the Rurik dynasty, which reigned for more than 730 years. Such were the beginnings of the great heritage of Ukraine.

Thanks to GORGANY, which is based in Lviv and led by Olha Kohut, we will have an opportunity to glimpse that heritage. The children are going to present prozyvalky, vzywalky, as well as youth folk dances, songs and games native of the mountainous areas in the Carpathian region. The audience will see: Kosmachanka, Little dove, Bukovina, Tropotyanka. During one evening concert we will immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of May-time merrymaking - summer play and games taking place near the Orthodox church or in the commons out of the village in the period between Easter and the Kupala Night.

And what about the musical band? Of course, there will be the highlight - the dulcimer known in Ukraine since the 17th century; the kind that Jankiel played during the betrothal of Sophie and Thaddeus.

And so GORGANY are inviting you on a trip to Hutsulshchyna; it’s an occasion that merits a song:

“There the Prut and Cheremosh accompany the Hutsuls with their murmurs,
And the merry kolomyika rouses you to dance.
There is no better life for a Hutsul than in a mountain pasture.
If by a twist of fate he ends up in a vale, he is sure to die of longing”.

A merry kolomyika? Will we recognize it during the performance by the ensemble from Lviv? We will see!
